Literary erotica is sort of the unicorn of the genre, but “The Erotic Bodhisattva” proves that it does indeed exist. It is a tale of three women, two living in different times and places, watched by one who searches for the next bodhisattva. Zenji is a modest Tibetian woman who once discovered her mind’s eye in a tantric meditation that allowed her to see across time and space into other lives, ultimately to be one of them. Called a saint by some, and a witch by others, her story is told by Chodren, her lover and fellow outcast.
Sarah’s story is both sensuous and real, a journey of seductive self discovery as she moves from a nervous art model who can’t quit fidgeting to a sort of spiritual partner to Paul, a top notch photographer and tantric master. Zenji considers her a trite, pretentious little girl and cannot understand how she could possibly be connected to the dakini. The other woman is the rani, and I’ll just say that her story is a jaw dropper and leave it at that. I don’t want to spoil how it goes!
It’s a brilliant piece of work, spiritual as much as sensual, and definitely one I’ll be reading more than once.
